MFA Director Ken LaZebnik

Ken LaZebnik is an American playwright, screenwriter, and television writer. Over the past twenty-five years, he has written for many one-hour television dramas, including writing over twenty episodes of Touched By An Angel. He was a writer/producer for that show for eight years, and wrote many of their most memorable Christmas episodes. He also wrote and produced for such shows as Star Trek: EnterpriseJack’s Place, Army WivesProvidence, and When Calls the Heart. He wrote three episodes of the PBS series In Concert at the White House, including a salute to Broadway which featured Patti LuPone. He is currently writing a pilot for a major streaming network which will be officially announced this summer.

With Garrison Keillor, he co-wrote Robert Altman’s last film, A Prairie Home Companion, which starred Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, and Kevin Kline. He also wrote the popular holiday film The Christmas Cottage, starring Peter O’Toole and Marcia Gay Harden.

LaZebnik’s plays have been performed across America. Three of his fourteen plays have focused on autism, including On The Spectrum, which was awarded a Steinberg Citation from the American Theatre Critics Association. His newest play, ANIMATE, a site-specific piece about zoos, racism, and philanthropy, will be staged by the Mixed Blood Theatre at the St. Paul Como Park Zoo in September.
